ST. GEORGE, Utah (Dec. 2, 2025) – Join the American Legion on December 7 at 10:48 a.m. at St. George’s Tonaquint Cemetery for a brief and yet heartfelt wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
“This meaningful event honors the brave members of the armed forces who perished during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, precisely 84 years ago,” said Marti Bigbie, Area 4 Commander of the American Legion. “Our gathering honors those whose bravery amidst the turmoil of Pearl Harbor exemplified the resilience that defined our nation. Everyone is invited to witness this poignant ceremony and reflect on the courage and sacrifice that set the tone for America’s determination during World War II.”
As President Franklin Delano Roosevelt stated, December 7, 1941, remains “a date which will live in infamy.” The surprise attack by Japan not only resulted in significant loss, with 2,403 killed and 1,178 wounded, but also spurred America into action, marking the beginning of its involvement in World War II.
America rapidly transformed its peacetime economy into the world’s largest war machine, producing planes, ships and weapons at unprecedented rates. The U.S. joined with Allies, including the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union, forming a strategic coalition to counter Axis powers. Key battles such as Midway and Normandy turned the tide in favor of the Allies.
“This was one of those rare times in the history of our country when we were truly one,” Bigbie added. “We seek to honor these heroes and reflect on a time when the fate of the free world truly hung in the balance, paying tribute to the enduring spirit of those who fought valiantly for liberty and peace.”
Veterans from various military branches will participate in this special ceremony, commemorating their sacrifices and the unity and spirit of the American people during this critical time in history. The event will begin at exactly 10:48 a.m. – 7:48 a.m. Honolulu time, when the attack commenced.
