ST. GEORGE — A test of endurance awaits during the 2nd annual Dragon’s Tail Stair Climb Challenge 5K/1K on January 17, as athletes from throughout St. George and beyond brave the 333 Tech Ridge Stairs. This year’s event starts at 7:30 a.m. and will showcase a new 5K and 1K course, alongside the well-known Sprint Challenge and Endurance Challenge hosted in the previous year.
“The Dragon’s Tail Stair Climb Challenge is the most fun, friendly and intimidating physical event of the St. George Races calendar,” said Aaron Metler, Race Supervisor for the City of St. George. “There really is something fun for all ages and we view it as the ultimate spectator event — you can watch a panoramic view of all the participants from the top.”
The Sprint Challenge is a test of speed consisting of one single lap up the staircase, the fastest being deemed the victor. The Endurance Challenge consists of 25 laps up and down the stairs over the course of 6 hours, with the last lap being a final sprint to the top — the finalist to be named Dragon King or Queen.
If one of those challenges are not enough, you can do all three as part of the Dragon Slayer Challenge.” All Dragon Slayer Challenge participants will do the 5K/1K, Speed Challenge and the Endurance Challenge and get an exclusive Dragon Tail Slayer Challenge Special Award.
Medals are given out upon completion of one lap and different charms are added for every five laps completed; as well as finisher medals for the 5K and 1K races.
“With the additions to the event, the number of registered participants have soared; we are excited to welcome over 350 runners this year,” Metler added. “We encourage you to come out and be part of this truly unique family fun event. Whether it’s one lap or 25, people of all ages and ability levels are encouraged to join the stair climb community!
The 5K and 1K race will start at about 7:30 a.m.; Sprint Challenge starts at 9 a.m.; Endurance Challenge starts at 10 a.m.
