50th St. George Marathon features record number of runners, possibility of record-shattering performances, October 3

ST. GEORGE — The wait is almost over.

At 7 a.m. on October 3, a record-setting field of 10,000 runners from across the globe will toe the starting line for the 50th running of the St. George Marathon. For participants, volunteers and fans alike, this beloved race promises an unforgettable climax to months of intense physical and emotional preparation.

“The St. George Marathon provides an experience like no other, showcasing the awe-inspiring natural terrain while runners test their endurance,” said Michelle Graves, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services for the City of St. George. “This year we have an incredible prize purse and have attracted a variety of top-flight marathon runners. This is a celebration 50 years in the making.”

On the men’s side, three runners are projected to challenge the course record of 2 hours, 13 minutes, 56 seconds set by Jake Heslington in 2025. They are: Michael Otteson (Provo), Eric Nelson (Nibley) and Travis Feeny (Cedar City). Female competitors figuring to be in the championship mix include Shannon Smith (Paonia, Colo.), Morgan Jensen (Sandy) and three-time winner Sylvia Bedford (South Jordan). All are projected to finish within the 2:29 to 2:33 range.

This year’s St. George Marathon includes runners from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with 20 countries represented.

The festivities begin with the St. George Marathon and Half Marathon Expo on Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dixie Convention Center. Participants are invited to pick up their race packets, while several dozen vendors will have a variety of race-related merchandise, including official St. George Marathon souvenirs, available for purchase.

Later on Oct. 2, the St. George Marathon 5K and Fun Run events will take place at Vernon Worthen Park. These events offer a great opportunity for athletes to participate in the St. George Marathon without tackling the full 26.2 miles. The Fun Run begins at 5 p.m. followed by the Marathon 5K at 6 p.m.

On marathon morning, the Mayor’s Walk begins at 7 a.m. Led by Mayor Jimmie Hughes, this 1-mile course starts at the Washington County School District parking lot, heads east on Tabernacle, down Main Street and across the marathon finish line at Vernon Worthen Park.
