Annual St. George Fishing Derby celebrates 30th year; 2026 event set for Upper Tawa Pond on March 28

ST. GEORGE — The 30th St. George Fishing Derby invites children 12 years old and younger to practice their skills with a hook, line and sinker at the Upper Tawa Pond (2200 Snow Canyon Parkway) on March 28 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This annual event is made possible through a partnership between Southern Utah Anglers and the City of St. George, with the goal of teaching youngsters a skill that can benefit them for the rest of their lives.

“When a young mom, with tears in her eyes, thanks you for helping her three young kids catch their first fish, it’s magical,” said Rick Rosenberg of the Southern Utah Anglers. “That’s why we keep doing it.”

Fishing poles and bait will be available for all participants at no cost. Parents and participants are encouraged to bring chairs for seating and coolers for caught fish. During the derby, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will teach fishing etiquette and donated prizes will be distributed to participants.

“The Fishing Derby is a unique event that gives children a chance to learn a new skill and enjoy the outdoors,” said Hannah Keller, Recreation Supervisor for the City of St. George. “The goal is for all children to have the opportunity to experience the simple joys of fishing.”

Other sponsors of the Fishing Derby include: Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Hurst Ace Hardware, Empire Waste Services, Al’s Sporting Goods, Cal Ranch, Buck’s Ace Hardware and Pepsi.
