As the St. George Marathon gets ready for its 48th race, energy is high and excitement pulsates throughout community

Weekend’s festivities start with Expo, Oct. 4; Marathon set for Oct. 5

ST. GEORGE — The culmination of an emotional journey for runners, volunteers and spectators alike is set for October 5 at 7 a.m. as the highly anticipated St. George Marathon begins. The 48th edition of this beloved race will involve nearly 8,000 runners from all over the United States and throughout the world.

“The St. George Marathon is the signature event of our vibrant city,” said Michelle Graves, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services at the City of St. George. “This remarkable marathon, which brings together runners from 48 states as well as 14 different countries in a celebration of endurance and goodwill. It showcases our stunning landscape but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and excitement that resonates through our city.”

Questions abound leading up to race day. Will J.J. Santana of Las Vegas capture an unprecedented third consecutive St. George Marathon? Will Sylvia Bedford of South Jordan also claim a third straight crown as the fastest woman in Southern Utah? Will St. George’s own Aaron Metler, the only four-time winner of the race, return to the top of the podium?

Those questions and many more await answers as race weekend approaches.

The festivities begin with the St. George Marathon and Half Marathon Expo on Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dixie Convention Center. Participants are invited to pick up their race packets, while more than 40 vendors will have a variety of race-related merchandise, including official St. George Marathon souvenirs, available for purchase.

Later on Oct. 4, the St. George 5K and Fun Run Walk N’ Roll events will take place just outside the Dixie Convention Center. These events offer a great opportunity for athletes to participate in the St. George Marathon without tackling the full 26.2 miles. The 5K starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Fun Run Walk N’ Roll at 6:30 p.m.

On Oct. 5, the 38th Annual Mayor’s Walk begins at 7 a.m. Led by Mayor Michele Randall, this 1-mile course starts at the Washington County School District parking lot, heads east on Tabernacle, south Main Street and across the marathon finish line at Vernon Worthen Park.

Spectators can find designated areas to watch and support runners here.

“The St. George Marathon is an extraordinary event that thrives on the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteers,” Graves added. “Volunteers are essential for ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all participants, whether at aid stations or along the course. Join us in making this a success and take this opportunity to engage with visitors, showcase the spirit of St. George and be part of something truly special.”
