Acclaimed illustrator and fine artist Craig Fetzer will lead a 3-hour hands-on pastel workshop Saturday May 10, offering participants a unique opportunity to explore the depth and vibrancy of pastel as a fine art medium. With over 35 years of experience as a professional illustrator and member of the Society of Illustrators of New York, Fetzer brings a wealth of creative knowledge and technical skill to this immersive session.
The workshop, ideal for both aspiring and experienced artists, will guide attendees through a comprehensive process of creating pastel artwork—from concept to critique. Participants will explore topics including:
- A brief history of pastel as an artistic medium
- Selecting subject matter and using effective reference images
- Establishing the overall goal: composition, originality, theme, and technique
- Creating an initial charcoal drawing on pastel board
- Developing a background and selecting appropriate pastel types and colors
- Learning to “begin with the end in mind” to guide creative decisions
- Mastering the pastel process, including highlights and shadowing for finishing touches
- Group critique to encourage growth and feedback
All workshop materials will be provided, though participants are welcome to bring their own additional supplies. The cost is $40 per person.
Fetzer’s distinguished career has included work in a wide range of mediums—from watercolor and acrylic to airbrush and pen and ink. As a fine artist, his passion for pastel stands out, with his pieces exhibited in solo shows, galleries, and national art competitions. A current member of the Pastel Society of America, Fetzer emphasizes pastel’s unique combination of fresh color and graphic quality, distinguishing it from other media.
