ST. GEORGE — Soon, the United States will celebrate its Semiquincentennial — the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. To commemorate this great achievement and pay homage to the visionaries who laid the groundwork for the creation of the United States of America, the City of St. George will unveil its new Daughters of the American Revolution America 250! Patriot Marker on the City Hall Plaza (61 S. Main), July 2 at 8 a.m.
Local organizations joining the celebration include the Color Country Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Red Cliffs of Zion Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
“DAR’s America 250! Patriot Marker initiative was created to ensure that as we mark this incredible milestone, we do not forget those individuals who risked everything to give birth to American democracy and the freedoms we continue to enjoy,” said St. George Mayor Jimmie Hughes. “With this plaque, the City of St. George joins communities from coast to coast in dedicating a lasting, physical tribute to their legacy.”
The Revolutionary War was fought thousands of miles away on the eastern seaboard. However, the spirit of those Patriots did not stop at the Appalachian Mountains. It traveled west. It is the exact same spirit of resilience and self-reliance that later inspired the pioneers to settle St. George. They looked at a rugged, unforgiving landscape and saw the promise of a thriving community.
“The founding of our nation and the founding of St. George share a common thread: ordinary people doing extraordinary things to build a better future for generations they would never meet,” Hughes added. “The freedoms secured in 1776 are the freedoms we exercise here today. The liberty they fought for allows us to build our businesses, raise our families and practice our faiths freely right here in Southern Utah.”
