ST. GEORGE — Trees, fun and service come together in the annual Arbor Day Celebration, set for April 26 at 9 a.m. at Bloomington Hills North Park (839 E Vermillion Ave). This family friendly event highlights the importance of trees and the environment, encouraging people to help preserve the natural beauty of the community.
The Arbor Day Celebration is a yearly partnership between the City of St. George, the Shade Tree Board and Star Nursery. Volunteers will be treated to a complimentary breakfast, while children can enjoy crafts and games. There will also be shrub giveaways available. Participants are encouraged to bring a pair of gardening gloves.
“We are thrilled to celebrate Arbor Day and the importance of trees to the quality of life for St. George residents,” said Shane Moore, Director of the City of St. George’s Parks and Community Services department. “This event is an opportunity for all of us to come together to learn about and take action in sustaining our city’s natural resources.”
Arbor Day, a global celebration that has been observed for 152 years, aims to replenish the Earth with one of its most valuable resources—trees. As noted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a mature tree can absorb over 48 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year while simultaneously releasing oxygen in return.
For the last 32 years, St. George has been a proud member of the Tree City USA program. Since 1976, the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program has recognized and supported the City of St. George’s residents and leaders who create places to play, room to breathe and beauty on every street.
“We’re awfully proud of that designation,” Moore added. “It goes to show that this community’s hard work is paying off.”
In St. George’s desert climate, trees play a crucial role in cooling the environment by helping to reduce heat during the hot summer months. Planting more trees creates cooler surroundings, as they provide shade and release water vapor through transpiration, offering an eco-friendly solution to heat reduction.
