ST. GEORGE — Students may be heading back to the classroom this month, but the City of St. George still has plenty of summer fun lined up.
On August 14 at 7 p.m., the community is invited to the Movies in the Park screening of “Kung Fu Panda” at Royal Oaks Park. Next on the agenda, Dick Earl’s Electric Witness will take the Concert in the Park stage at Vernon Worthen Park at 7 p.m. on August 10 for an outstanding evening of blues and soul.
Wrapping up the August schedule, families are invited to Historic Town Square on August 28 to watch a special showing of “Zootopia 2.”
“Our warm August evenings are the perfect time to enjoy some terrific, family friendly entertainment under the stars,” said Cody Schmitt, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services. “We hope everyone will grab a blanket or some lawn chairs and join us for these wonderful, free community events.”
Kung Fu Panda, one of the most popular animated action-comedies ever produced, recounts the tale of Po (voiced by Jack Black), a clumsy panda who is unexpectedly chosen as a Dragon Warrior, and must train in kung fu to save his valley from a villainous snow leopard. In Zootopia 2 – another animated favorite – bunny cop Judy Hopps and fox detective Nick Wilde team up again to solve a mysterious case that pulls them deeper into Zootopia’s twists and turns.
On the musical side, fans of blues will have ample reason to rejoice with the return of St. George’s own Dick Earl’s Electric Witness to Concert in the Park. With family members Isaac and Mari Ericksen, along with Thomas Anderson, Dick Earl and his band showcase a rhythm section that has won notoriety on the Utah Blues Festival stage and beyond.
A long-standing member of the Las Vegas Blues Society, Dick has performed with numerous noted studio artists, worked as a pit musician at Tuacahn Amphitheater, shared the stage with national award-winning recording artist Tas Cru, and was featured in “Into the Fire,” a 2023 documentary which premiered at the DOCUTAH International Documentary Film Festival in St. George. Electric Witness also finished third overall in the 2023 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, hosted by the prestigious Blues Foundation.
Presented by the City of St. George, the Movies in the Park and Concerts in the Park series are free and open to the public. Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic items and enjoy family friendly entertainment throughout the summer.
