Washington County leaders are proud to announce the official ribbon cutting of the Purgatory Correctional Facility Medical Unit and Housing Expansion, a vital investment in the safety, health, and well-being of staff, inmates, and the broader community.
This expansion strengthens the County’s ability to provide appropriate medical care, improve rehabilitation outcomes, and safely house individuals within the correctional system—all while doing so in a financially responsible manner. The project was funded through the County’s share of the national Opioid Settlement and Federal ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) Funds, ensuring those dollars are reinvested at the local level.
“This project represents both compassion and accountability,” said Commissioner Victor Iverson. “We are committed to protecting our community and using the resources entrusted to us wisely. The opioid crisis has taken a heavy toll, and it’s only right that the settlement funds go toward helping those affected while strengthening our public safety infrastructure in a fiscally sound way.”
The expansion improves the existing medical unit designed to care for inmates dealing with withdrawal, mental health challenges, and chronic conditions—many of which are directly tied to substance abuse. The additional housing provides much-needed capacity and flexibility for the facility, helping ensure safer conditions for both deputies and inmates.
“Our goal has always been to serve this community with integrity and foresight,” said Sheriff Nate Brooksby. “This expansion allows us to better meet the complex needs of those in our care while protecting our officers and taxpayers. It’s a smart investment that enhances safety, supports rehabilitation, and reflects the County’s long-term commitment to responsible stewardship.”
The ribbon cutting will take place at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the Purgatory Correctional Facility, located at 750 South 5300 West, Hurricane, Utah. County officials, law enforcement, and community members are invited to attend and tour the new facility spaces following the ceremony.
